One of my soft hearted and expressive children, Selva,
always tops the score in good deeds as he confidently
proclaims the purpose of his life is to help others.

The following are small steps in service
that our children, teachers and staff have taken:
Altaf, a child
in my class has epilepsy. Whenever he has a fit, some
of my kids actually carry him to take him to his destination.

I gave a seat
to a woman in the bus as she couldn't stand due to her
sprained leg. Krishnamurthy
I filled water
for my neighbour who is suffering from a severe disease.
Rubina
I returned the
extra rupee given to me by the conductor by mistake.

On
Sunday, I found a wallet at the Race Course. I looked
around and asked a few people but nobody claimed it.
I noticed a photograph on the wallet and searched for
the person. When I found him I handed the wallet to
him and he was very grateful. Santosh
Recently for Raksha Bandhan we decided
to make rakhis (friendship bands) for the boys of an
orphanage. My class was eager to know about their life
and struggles and when it was time to leave they decided
to give their personal rakhis to add to the 40 rakhis
which we had made together.
My good deed was
when I taught my mother to sign! Pushpa
One
day I saw a small girl. She had lost her way to her
house. I took her to the police station and the police
knew her house. I told him to take care of the girl.
The policeman told me not to worry.
I was very happy with what I did. Dinesh
Sagar
has managed to convince his dad to give space to Doorstep
School, another NGO, to run from his own home. His father
at first wanted to charge them, however Sagar has convinced
him not to. Anjali

Last year during
Christmas, we took our centre to the JJ old age home.
We reached there and all my children were a bit shy
and nervous and didn't know how to go about talking
to them. Once they saw the older children talking to
the people there, they also started. I was amazed how
some of them went into the kitchen and started helping
there. At the end, when it was time to leave, we saw
how difficult it was for our kids to just let go. The
people there were so happy and touched that they told
us to some more often. My children enjoyed this trip
and definitely are looking forward to doing such things
more often. Nikki

Earlier
this year our community was served a demolition notice
because the government wanted to build a bridge to connect
2 buildings. The notice was given on a Friday, which
ensured that they could not approach the court for a
stay order. The demolition meant that the families would
be homeless or moved to places far away from their current
location. There was a lot of damage and destruction
but we managed to save more houses from being affected.
The general sense in the community was of fear, tension
and instability. But another feeling was of cooperation,
sharing and humanity. People went out of their way to
provide basic necessities and there was even a community
kitchen initiated by Akanksha adolescents!
