Football and the Akanksha Girls

In the past year, our girl students kicked up a storm in the field of football, breaking boundaries and stereotypes of every kind.

A few months ago the grade 4 girls, from Mahalaxmi School in Mumbai, won the 2nd place in the Milind Deora South Mumbai Soccer tournament.

🏆 It was a tournament for all schools in South Mumbai.

The girls showed incredible resilience playing the semi-final and final match, back to back in the same day and giving an excellent performance that won the praise from even the coach of the other team.

More recently Nirjala was one among the 4 students chosen to train with the Queens Park Rangers Football team in London.

Some time ago, it was the girls from Sitaram school who were making it into the papers with their feats in football.

The School Football Championship SFC which was an All India competition where 4 cities -Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore participated and it was held during May

Under 10 and Under 12 girls teams were winners in Mumbai and while the Under10 and Under 12 girls teams were – Runners-up

The girls made us proud by bagging the winning trophy at an inter NGO football tournament. Muddy fields, muddy knees, and a good lot of sporty action, minus any gender disparity on the field!!

As we are talking about girls and football, we must remember how in 2016  our Grade 8 student from Shindewadi Mumbai Public School who was a part of the team that won the School Football Championship in Jan 2016 and further got selected by the Crystal Palace FC scouts for a 10-day training program in London.

For Avantika to be among the top ten chosen students from India makes all of us at Akanksha immensely proud of her achievements and we hope she reaches for bigger and brighter skies in future!!

A special thank you to Just For Kicks for giving her such a wonderful platform.

In the latest news, our student Alifiya Chowdhary from our Abhyudaya School has been selected by the Oscar Foundation to attend a workshop on Goals for Girls Leadership Training in Delhi.

The Goals for Girls Leadership Summit unites grassroots programs to invest in leadership development of young women through football.

It’s a bright start to a brand new year and we can’t wait to see what else our kids are going to get up to!
