Inside a Kindergarten Classroom Where Play Leads the Way
Last week, I had the privilege of observing Akanksha’s kindergarten classroom during free play time at Mahalakshmi Mumbai Public School in Tardeo. The space was thoughtfully arranged, with low tables and open areas that invited children to explore, move freely, and engage with a range of carefully curated materials.
For young children, play isn’t a break from learning…it is learning. In that 30-minute window, I witnessed discovery, collaboration, negotiation, creativity, and problem-solving—all unfolding organically in a safe, child-centered environment.
What stood out to me was how deeply engaged the children were. Some worked in pairs to build intricate structures, negotiating roles and planning together. Others sat in quiet focus, determined to complete puzzles on their own. The joy and pride on their faces when they succeeded said it all. And what an incredible way to foster choice and voice in our kindergarten classrooms!
What made this moment even more special? A large portion of the play materials were provided by the BMC for our early grades. It was heartening to see the intentionality behind these resources, and even more so to see how meaningfully they were being used in classrooms.
Here’s to the power of play, and to creating more spaces where children can learn with joy, agency, and wonder.
Grateful to be part of this journey with The Akanksha Foundation.
